Port Susan Marine Stewardship Area Conservation Action Plan Update Recommendations Report

Port Susan Marine Stewardship Area (MSA) Conservation Action Plan (CAP) was first developed in 2012 by a collaborative group of partners representing federal, state, tribal, and local governments and non-profit organizations with a goal of achieving a healthy marine and estuarine ecosystem in Port Susan with thriving biodiversity and strong recreational and resource based industries. Ten years after the CAP was initially developed, the Snohomish County Marine Resources Committee (MRC), in partnership with the Island County MRC, reconvened partners to assess the current status of the CAP and identify ways in which to make the plan more useful and effective for the next decade and beyond.

Skagit MRC Pinto Abalone 2022 Final Report

The pinto (northern) abalone, Haliotis kamtschatkana, is the primary abalone species indigenous to Washington waters, but populations are severely depleted and considered functionally extinct.  The current number and distribution of reproductive wild abalone is too low and too widely distributed to maintain a sustainable population. Steps are being taken to help restore the pinto abalone population in northern Puget Sound waters, including Skagit County through this project of the MRC.

Whatcom MRC Beach Seine with Kids 2022

Whatcom Marine Resources Committee (MRC) piloted a new project titled “Beach Seine with Schools”. The goal of the project was to provide an opportunity for elementary school students to see juvenile salmon using their intertidal habitat along the shoreline. For this pilot year, the target audience was 4 th grade students in the Bellingham School District. The opportunity was also shared with local tribal schools in effort to expand participation in the following years.

Comprehensive Review of the 2012 Port Susan Marine Stewardship Area Conservation Action Plan

The Port Susan Marine Stewardship Area (MSA) comprises diverse marine and estuarine ecosystems and has been identified as a high priority conservation area in the Puget Sound. In 2012, the Island County and Snohomish County MRCs collaborated with community partners to create a Conservation Action Plan (CAP) aimed at conserving and restoring Port Susan Bay to achieve thriving biodiversity and to support strong recreational and resource-based industries. As 10 years have passed since the initial development of the CAP, Island and Snohomish MRCs are working collaboratively to re-engage community partners. In 2022 a research team from Evans School of Public Policy and Governance Student Consulting Lab conducted a comprehensive review of the 2012 CAP.

Snohomish MRC 2021 Estuary Piling Removal Implementation Report and Appendices

Snohomish MRC is leading this project to promote the removal of independent pilings in the Snohomish River estuary to improve water quality and habitat conditions in the estuary. Removal of creosote-treated pilings is a primary interest of the MRC due to the contaminants released into water and sediments, which can negatively impact the marine food web.

In phase one, pilings in the estuary downstream (north) of Highway 2 were inventoried and prioritized. In this second phase, the MRC began implementation planning with public agency and tribal piling owners to facilitate piling removal. Landowner participation in piling removal is entirely voluntary. This report documents the phase 2 work, including considerations for future work to advance additional piling removal efforts in the Snohomish River estuary.

Island MRC 2021 Needs Assessment Overview

The Island County MRC conducted a needs assessment in Winter 2021 to aid strategic planning for the coming 3-5 years. The goal was to identify pressing and emerging marine resource issues in Island County and to learn what MRC roles and projects are most valued.

Based on interviews, this assessment provided qualitative, anecdotal information to support stewardship of Island County’s marine resources. This information is a reflection of the context of marine resource issues in Island County at this moment in time and we provide this overview with the hope it may be useful for county departments and conservation organizations as well as the MRC.
