Carter Webb joined the Island MRC to deepen his understanding of local ecosystems. He’s passionate about helping the planet and values all the opportunities the MRC offers to connect with and protect nature.

Growing up in Denver, Colorado, Carter developed a deep fascination with the ocean, despite only seeing it occasionally. To him, the ocean represented an uncharted frontier. One of his most vivid memories was a family kayaking camping trip to Prince William Sound, Alaska, where he learned about egg-laying sharks, urchin-crunching otters, and even how to chill a soda on an iceberg.

Carter is eager to contribute to local conservation efforts and appreciates the diverse activities the MRC offers to protect and preserve the natural world. He notes, “My involvement in MRC activities has opened my eyes to the complexities of local conservation efforts and highlighted the dedication and many volunteer hours that go into monitoring and preserving our precious habitats. Witnessing this commitment has not only been inspiring but has also reinforced my passion for environmental stewardship.”

As the Project Lead for the Bull Kelp Kayak Monitoring with the Island County MRC, Carter has found his kayaking safety skills to be invaluable. He has also honed leadership skills and field methodologies that he aims to apply to future projects. He is proud of contributions to various initiatives, including water quality testing and restoration projects and his experiences have sparked an interest in enhancing his skills in data analysis and GIS technologies to drive impactful results.

Looking ahead, Carter hopes to use his skills on MRC projects to help build richer data sets that inform community conservation priorities and connections to our marine environments. He hopes to inspire collective stewardship for years to come.

“It is wonderful to be part of a community who has already done so much to steward and conserve our marine resources, and I am excited to contribute to what is next.”
