Olivia J. Graham joined the San Juan MRC in the Fall of 2024. As a marine scientist passionate about local ecosystems, particularly eelgrass health, she joined the MRC to engage with the community and use her expertise to protect coastal habitats. She values that the MRC brings diverse membership, which brings together people from various backgrounds who share a love for the marine environment. For Olivia, the group’s collaborative spirit and their shared commitment to making a positive impact is both inspiring and rewarding.

Olivia’s Postdoctoral research at Friday Harbor Labs focuses on eelgrass meadows around the San Juan Islands, a crucial coastal habitat, has deepened her passion for their preservation. Reflecting on childhood memories of exploring beaches in Olympia with her family, Olivia credits those experiences with sparking her appreciation for marine environments.

"Effective communication is a most valuable skill when participating in the MRC," Olivia says. "As a scientist, it's essential to communicate clearly. Whether I'm sharing research with MRC members, local government officials, or the public, it's important to articulate our position on environmental issues. I aim to present my scientific findings in ways that are accessible to a broad audience, and I find those same communication skills crucial in my work with the MRC."

Through her work with the MRC, Olivia hopes to deepen her connection to the natural environment and dedication to preserving the Salish Sea, aiming to ensure future generations can enjoy the same natural wonders that inspired her. Learn more about Olivia’s eelgrass research in the San Juans.
