Chuckanut Village Marsh Restoration Project Monitoring
The Whatcom County Marine Resources Committee (MRC) performed biological monitoring in the Chuckanut Village marsh area to measure the effectiveness of replacing a partial fish passage barrier culvert with an appropriately-sized box culvert. The MRC monitored use of the marsh by juvenile salmonids before and after the City of Bellingham removed the culvert in March of 2011. This project effectively involved the local community in restoration and monitoring, with 27 different community members co

Elwha Nearshore Consortium—Beached Bird Monitoring at Elwha Bluffs and Crescent Bay
With 45 data collection sites in Clallam County, COASST data provide the most comprehensive baseline against which species and event-specific mortality of Washington’s priority species, federally-listed threatened and endangered species, as well as locally abundant breeders, can be assessed. Specifically, COASST data have documented threats to priority species of fishery bycatch (Hamel et al. 2009), entanglement (Lyday et al. 2009), and climate (Parrish et al. 2008). Within this grant, we focus

Defining Fish Use of Subtidal Vegetated Habitats of the Elwha and Comparative Shorelines
The goal of this project was to investigate fish use of subtidal vegetated habitats in the Elwha and adjacent drift cells, including Crescent Bay. Specific objectives were: estimate areal extent, depth distribution, fraction, and patchiness of vegetated habitats; and estimate relative fish density and distribution within vegetated habitats.

British Columbia Derelict Fishing Gear Survey and Removal Project Final Report
Funding from the Province of British Columbia, Canada, was provided to the Northwest Straits Foundation to conduct derelict fishing gear survey and removals in British Columbia waters. The removal operations were coordinated with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the British Columbia Ministry of Environment. The purposes of this project were to demonstrate that derelict fishing gear has negative impacts on the marine resources of British Columbia and to demonstrate that gear remo

Derelict Fishing Gear Removal in Puget Sound; ARRA Project Final Report
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding for this project was awarded to the Foundation in July, 2009. At that time, the Initiative had already removed more than 1,300 derelict fishing nets from Puget Sound and published research had documented the devastating impacts this derelict gear was having on important marine species and habitats. ARRA funding enabled the Initiative‟s removal program to grow from one vessel operating part time to four removal vessels operating full time as w
