Food Habits for Pacific Salmon, Baitfish, And Their Potential Competitors and Predators in the Marine Waters of Washington
From August 1978 through September 1979, the Department of Fisheries analyzed the foot habits, competitors of, and predators of salmon and baitfish in the Puget Sound. The feeding ecology and trophic interactions of these fish was studied via several sampling techniques, the findings of which are presented in this report.

Evalutation of Existing Marine Intertidal and Shallow Subtidal Biologic Data
This study was done to evaluate marine intertidal and shallow subtidal biologic data in the waters of northwestern Washington. The objective of this study was to better understand biologic communities which may in the future be susceptible environmental degradation as a result of the increase in oil shipment and refining operations in the region.

Recovery of the Strait of Juan de Fuca Intertidal Habitat Following Experimental Contamination with oil
The research in this report deals with recovery of intertidal and shallow subtidal communities in experimental habitats contaminated with spilled crude oil. With increasing oil tanker traffic in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, studies were conducted as to how to control and combat potential spills.

Epibenthic Zooplankton Assemblages at Selected Sites Along the Strait of Juan de Fuca
In conjunction with coincident nearshore fish collections, a survey of epibenthic zooplankton characterizing shallow nearshore habitats along the Strait of Juan de Fuca was conducted in 1978. The main objective of this study was to provide information on the trophic relationships and food web structure of the biotic communities most vulnerable to pollution, or which could be involved in transfer or bioaccumulation of petroleum hydrocarbons.

Nearshore Fish & Macroinvertebrate Assemblages Along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Including Foot Habits of the Common Nearshore Fish
This report presents the findings of a seasonal survey of nearshore fish in the Strait of Juan de Fuca from May 1976 through June 1979. Macroinvertebrates caught as bycatch were documented as well. Data recorded from the fish included species present, life history stage, abundance, etc.

Dynamics of Port Angeles Harbor and Approaches Washington
This report presents the findings of the analysis of physical processes that transport and disperse spilled oil in Port Angeles Harbor. Observations focused on tides, currents, winds, runoff, water properties, oil spills, suspended sediment, and pulp mill effluent from a data base that spanned from 1932 to 1979.

Food Web Relationships of Northern Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca
This report examines the long term effects of oil spills in the marine environment throughout the Strait of Juan de Fuca, specifically the bioaccumulation that results from it. Petroleum hydrocarbons work their way through the food web in a bottom up effect. This process can result in detrimental changes to the overall community structure of marine life.

The Strait of Juan de Fuca Intertidal and Subtidal Benthos
This report presents the findings of a study examining the distribution, abundance, seasonal variations, and annual variation of the intertidal and shallow subtidal benthos in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. During a two year period, over 1,000 different plant and animal species were collected, 176 of which not previously been documented in the area.

Marine Mammals of Northern Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca
This report presents the findings of one year worth of marine mammal observations in the northern Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It was the first year of a two year study to determine their abundance and distribution. Information was gathered via aerial and small boat surveys, with behavioral patterns also being documented by extensive literature review.

Surface Drift Sheet Movement Observed in the Inner Strait of Juan de Fuca
The movements of 97 floatable drift sheets were observed and tracked in the Inner Strait of Juan de Fuca during August 22-26, 1978. The intent of the experiment was to observe the movements of the sheets, which approximate the movement of oil slicks resulting from spills. Plastic sheets were selected due to the fact they have specific gravities similar to some oils, and are as thick as some nearshore slicks.

The Intertidal and Shallow Subtidal Benthos of the Strait of Juan de Fuca
This report focuses on intertidal and shallow subtidal benthic communities that could be susceptible to the lethal and sublethal effects that an oil spill could cause. With increasing oil shipments moving through the Strait of Juan de Fuca, a baseline study was initiated to better understand the benthic community.

MESA - 1978 The Intertidal and Shallow Subtidal Benthos of the Strait of Juan de Fuca
With the potential existing for large scale oil shipment through the Strait of Juan de Fuca, a baseline study was initiated to document the distribution abundance and seasonal variation of the intertidal and shallow subtidal benthos along the Washington coast of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
Ten study sites representative of the range of habitats present were selected and sampled quarterly at high mid and low intertidal strata Once a year sampling was conducted at intermediate intertidal tidal heights and at Sm and 10m relative to MLLW.
