Juvenile Salmon and Nearshore Fish Use in Shallow Intertidal Habitat Associated with Cornet Bay
Island County Beach Watchers, Island County MRC and Washington State Parks. Collecting data about juvenile salmonid use of the nearshore at Cornet Bay is a part of the characterization process of the bay prior to nearshore habitat enhancement projects that are occurring at this location. The focus of this report is on fish abundance and size in Cornet Bay in 2011. This report is meant to inform local citizens and Cornet Bay project partners about fish populations.

Salish Sea Spartina Survey and Removal
In 2010, the Skagit MRC partnered with People For Puget Sound for a regional Spartina survey program that would expand the survey program to the Olympic Peninsula. This additional funding would also be used to support surveys in Whatcom County, where the proximity to BC’s expanding Spartina infestations in Boundary Bay raises concerns of re-infestation from the northern reaches of the Salish Sea. 2011 Pigeon Guillemot Study
2011 marks the fourth year of the Pigeon Guillemot survey. This monitoring entails prey choice, frequency of burrow deliveries and fledging success. In the years 2008, 2009, and 2010 colonies at 5 beaches were surveyed: Shore Meadows, Harrington Lagoon North, Harrington Lagoon South, Mutiny Sands and Rolling Hills.

Island MRC Aerial Eelgrass Surveys
This is an aerial photography task put together by pilot Gregg Ridder. Gregg developed a system to remotely take pictures from the planes cabin with a camera mounted under the wing. These pictures are then used to monitor eelgrass and kelp beds in the Salish Sea.

Groundwater Quality Monitoring in the Shallow Aquifer near Sequim, Clallam County, WA
Phase II purpose was to investigate groundwater quality in the shallow aquifer draining to streams and marine waters of the Dungeness watershed. Dual objectives included determining (a) the ambient quality of shallow groundwater for a broad region (determined by the MRC as east of the Dungeness River down gradient from City of Sequim), as well as (b) the concentrations of specific stormwater contaminants for wells found in Phase I to be vulnerable to land activities.

Installation and Monitoring of a Storm Water Antimicrobial Unit at Bay View, WA
In 2010 Skagit County MRC started a project to assess the operation of a small experimental storm drain filter system for it ability to reduce bacteria loading in storm water run off. A special filter unit known as Smart Sponge is used to remove oil, grease, sediments, metals, as well as being able to reduce bacterial loading.
The goals of the project presented in the report are to install a antimicrobial treatment system for storm water drainage, monitor influent and effluent water quality in regards to bacterial attenuation, and to restore water quality in South Padilla Bay to the point that swimming and recreational shellfish harvesting are deemed safe.
