Snohomish MRC 2021 Estuary Piling Removal Implementation Report and Appendices

Snohomish MRC is leading this project to promote the removal of independent pilings in the Snohomish River estuary to improve water quality and habitat conditions in the estuary. Removal of creosote-treated pilings is a primary interest of the MRC due to the contaminants released into water and sediments, which can negatively impact the marine food web.

In phase one, pilings in the estuary downstream (north) of Highway 2 were inventoried and prioritized. In this second phase, the MRC began implementation planning with public agency and tribal piling owners to facilitate piling removal. Landowner participation in piling removal is entirely voluntary. This report documents the phase 2 work, including considerations for future work to advance additional piling removal efforts in the Snohomish River estuary.

Island MRC 2021 Needs Assessment Overview

The Island County MRC conducted a needs assessment in Winter 2021 to aid strategic planning for the coming 3-5 years. The goal was to identify pressing and emerging marine resource issues in Island County and to learn what MRC roles and projects are most valued.

Based on interviews, this assessment provided qualitative, anecdotal information to support stewardship of Island County’s marine resources. This information is a reflection of the context of marine resource issues in Island County at this moment in time and we provide this overview with the hope it may be useful for county departments and conservation organizations as well as the MRC.

Snohomish MRC Prioritization of Snohomish River Estuary Pilings for Removal

The Snohomish County Marine Resources Committee (MRC) initiated a project to develop a prioritized list of independent pilings in the Snohomish River estuary to target for future removal. The MRC is interested in facilitating piling removal as a habitat action primarily due to the water quality and sediment quality impacts that creosote-treated pilings can have in the aquatic environment. This report describes the steps taken to prepare a spatial database of piling locations in the project area and a prioritization framework for evaluating pilings and identifying the highest priority pilings for removal.

San Juan MRC - Southern Resident Killer Whale Disturbance

One of the key threats to the endangered Southern Resident killer whale (SRKW) is vessel disturbance. Following the outcomes of the MRC-hosted community workshops of 2017 and 2018 and areas of concern identified by the Governor’s Southern Resident Orca Task Force, San Juan MRC continued their efforts to address boater behavior and awareness with respect to the SRKW. This report provides a summary of the outreach efforts, project participation and core accomplishments of the MRC over the course of the 2019-2020 grant year. Additionally, the report also provides an outline of expected efforts for the 2020-2021 grant year.

Island MRC Outreach 2019-2020

Outreach is an important aspect of the work of the Island County MRC, including internal communications to Island County leadership as well as external outreach to the local community. Outreach is an integral component of each MRC project – whether a highly visible restoration project or behind-the-scenes data analysis. By helping the community understand what the MRC does and why, the MRC hopes to increase public interest in learning about and caring for the local marine environment. Due to the emergence of COVID-19 and subsequent precautionary measures, the MRC had to make adaptations to outreach efforts, such as making more materials and resources available online. These adaptations are likely to continue into the future, and offer the opportunity for creative outreach techniques, and the potential to increase accessibility of  resources.
